Director Statement
The film landscape in Germany is very monotonous. Most German movies are either shallow comedies or dramas. Genre films such as action, thrillers or horror are few and far between. With the film “Goodnight Killer”, I wanted to prove to viewers that exciting and captivating genre cinema can also come from Germany.
Apart from the fact that I am an absolute thriller fan, I was totally impressed by the script for “Goodnight Killer”, which was written by my brother Malte. It was clear to me from the very beginning that I wanted to make this movie.
The mixture of swelling tension, unexpected twists and multi-dimensional characters captivated me. We are immersed in the dark underworld of Berlin, where there is no good and evil, no black and white. The characters are all dirty. But because of the baggage they carry with them, their weaknesses and their drive to survive, the audience can identify with them.
The particular challenge in the production was the financial means. Largely financed by my brother and myself, partly supported by family, friends and sponsors, we had to cope with a limited budget. The goal was always a professional realization, so that the film would visually look like a high budget production.
The cast and crew worked completely free of charge. That's why the filming was so special, as the whole team worked on the project with fun and passion. It was an honor for me to work with so many talented people.
